Report from Lloyd Daugherty:
(thanks to Kay Martin for sending me the report)
The Foothills Fall Festival is located in Maryville, TN, which is a bit south of Knoxville.
"Just caught Jerry Lee last night in Maryville, TN, just outside my home town of Knoxville. Although the Fan Club concert was great, Jerry looked much better and was in fine voice. And it was a good thing as over 22,000 folks paid $45 each and showed up for the outdoor concert. I was too far away for photo's (thank goodness for jumbo TV screens). A friend of mine was the MC. It was a real topnotch event! Jerry Lee's show was reminiscent of the "By Request ...Greatest Live Show On Earth" album with Jerry and the band alternating between rock 'n' roll and country. Jerry punctuated the ending of most songs with a primal Rebel yell, once again just like the album. All songs were complete and no words were forgotten. Among the highlights were a soulful well paced rendering of "Over The Rainbow" and a swinging version of the obscure yet underrated "Before The Night Is Over." Ken Lovelace was the sole guitar player, but another was simply not needed. Ken's licks were clear, strong and confident. The show kicked off with "Roll Over Beethoven" and concluded ninety rockin' minutes later with a unusually intense "Great Balls Of Fire." At the crescendo of the finale, Jerry's hair fell forward as he punished the baby grand. Soon the piano stool went flying as the crowd who had sung along with the first verse of "GBOF" went wild. The Memphis Mauler -- fresh from yet another great achievement -- took a quick bow, ran a comb through his disheveled hair and strolled off stage. The huge crowd was enthusiastically pleased and perhaps a little relieved to see with their own eyes and hear with their own ears that the Killer does indeed rock on!" At the Maryville show on Friday night, the following was Jerry's playlist: Roll Over Beethoven You Win Again Why You Been Gone So Long Over the Rainbow Sweet Little Sixteen Boogie Woogie Country Man Me and Bobbie McGee Chantilly Lace Drinkin' Wine Spo Dee O Dee Before the Night Is Over C C Rider She Even Woke Me Up To Say Goodbye Whole Lot of Shakin' Great Balls of Fire He was in a wonderful mood and in excellent health and it showed! He went back to the Ranch after the show and came back out on Sunday to play at the Little Nashville Opry in Nashville, Indiana about 4 p.m. and played for over an hour. He was again in a rockin' mood and the band was really >on
! Jerry specifically praised Robert Hall for his hot licks on drums. The playlist was: Roll Over Beethoven Over the Rainbow Why You Been Gone So Long She Even Woke Me Up To Say Goodbye Sweet Little Sixteen Chantilly Lace C C Rider Walkin' The Floor Over You (by request) Don't Put No Headstone On My Grave You Win Again Before the Night Is Over Mexicali Rose I Am What I Am George Whole Lot of Shakin' Great Balls of Fire Sorry I do not have any photos from these shows, but if one comes up, I will forward them to Web masters to put on their sites with this article. Feel free to post.
